Akito Kawahara: Akito Kawahara is a distinguished entomologist, holding the position of Director at the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity at the Florida Museum of Natural History, a part of the University of Florida. He is also a Curator at the museum and a Professor at the university. In 2023, he became Director of the McGuire Center, one of the world’s leading butterfly and moth research institutions, housing over 10 million specimens. His work at the center is focused on advancing research and educational initiatives related to Lepidoptera, particularly butterflies and moths. Kawahara’s scientific expertise lies in understanding the evolutionary development of butterflies and moths, which together make up approximately 160,000 species. His research delves into their genetics, behavior, and ecological roles. One area of particular interest is how moths defend themselves against predators, such as bats, through ultrasound. This investigation into predator-prey interactions reveals the intricate ways in which moths have adapted over time to evade predators.
